Art Nouveau Stair Balustrade

Client Brief

Balustrade draft model of stairsThis iron Balustrade is an absolute favourite of mine.  The proposed iron Balustrade was for a new build property in Lincolnshire and when the client came to us the staircase did not yet exist apart from on paper.  The client was a huge fan of the Art Nouveau movement just like me and really liked daffoldils.  They wanted the Balustrade to be a real statement piece with lots of impact andto come alive with lots of movement.

Design

Balustrade single daffodilAfter playing around with a number of ideas, I knew I had it when I came up with this simple drawing of a single daffodil that I could then use in a repeat pattern.  Part of the design challenge was in giving the piece the lightness, openess and movement but at the same time, in order to meet the requirements of the Building Regulations, ensuring there were no gaps large enough that a 100mm sphere could pass through.  We then add twisting forged newel posts and hand rail to add more movement to the piece.
